Right to Rent Checks – Update

The Home Office has released updated guidance for right to rent checks. The temporary measures put in place on 20^th March 2020 were due to cease on 17^th May 2021, this has now been extended to 20^th June 2021 with face-to-face checks required from 21^st June 2021.

The following temporary measures below can be used up until 20^th June 2021.

• checks can be carried out over video calls.
• tenants can send scanned documents or a photo of documents for checks using email or a mobile app, rather than sending originals.
• landlords should use the Landlord Checking Service if a prospective or existing tenant cannot provide any of the accepted documents.

Retrospective checks will not need to be carried out on tenants who has an adjusted check between 20^th March 2020 and 20^th June 2020.

It remains an offence to knowingly rent to a person who does not have right to rent in the UK.
