The Home Office has released updated guidance for right to rent checks. The temporary measures put in place on 20th March 2020 were due to cease on 17th May 2021, this has now been extended to 20th June 2021 with face-to-face checks required from 21st June 2021.
The following temporary measures below can be used up until 20th June 2021.
- checks can be carried out over video calls.
- tenants can send scanned documents or a photo of documents for checks using email or a mobile app, rather than sending originals.
- landlords should use the Landlord Checking Service if a prospective or existing tenant cannot provide any of the accepted documents.
Retrospective checks will not need to be carried out on tenants who has an adjusted check between 20th March 2020 and 20th June 2020.
It remains an offence to knowingly rent to a person who does not have right to rent in the UK.
